Configure rank balance requirements using a point system to ensure fair team composition

Rank Balance Settings

Configure rank balance requirements to ensure fair team composition. The rank balance system uses a point-based approach to validate teams and prevent imbalanced rosters.

What is Rank Balance?

Rank balance ensures teams have fair rank distribution by:

  • Point System: Each rank has a point value
  • Team Limits: Teams must stay under a point cap
  • Exception Rules: Allow a limited number of higher-ranked players
  • Validation: Teams are validated during registration

Enabling Rank Balance

Step 1: Access Settings

  1. Navigate to tournament settings
  2. Go to "Registration" or "Rank Balance" section
  3. Toggle "Enable Rank Balance" to on

Step 2: Configure Point System

The system uses a point-based approach:

  • Starting Points: Initial point cap for teams
  • Growth Points: Increased point cap (if using growth system)
  • Player Points: Points assigned to each rank tier and division

Point System Configuration

Starting Points

  • Starting Points: Base point cap for teams
  • Teams must have total points under this cap
  • Example: 50 points means team total must be ≤ 50

Growth Points

  • Growth Points: Higher point cap (optional)
  • Used for progressive balance systems
  • Allows teams to improve over time

Player Point Values

Points are assigned based on:

Tier Points

Each rank tier has a base point value:

  • Iron: 5 points
  • Bronze: 5 points
  • Silver: 10 points
  • Gold: 15 points
  • Platinum: 20 points
  • Diamond: 30 points
  • Master+: Higher values
Division Points

Additional points for division:

  • IV: 0 points
  • III: 1 point
  • II: 2 points
  • I: 3 points
Platinum+ Division Points

Special points for Platinum and above:

  • III: 2 points
  • II: 4 points
  • I: 6 points

Rank Limits

Maximum Rank

Set the highest rank allowed:

  • Max Rank: Tier, division, and LP limit
  • Players above this rank cannot register
  • Example: Diamond I 50LP maximum

Exception Rank

Allow limited exceptions:

  • Exception Rank: Higher rank allowed for exceptions
  • Max Exceptions: Number of players allowed above max rank
  • Example: Allow 1 Master player per team

How It Works

Team Validation

When a team registers:

  1. Calculate Points: System calculates points for each player
  2. Check Limits: Verifies team stays under point cap
  3. Validate Exceptions: Ensures exception rules are followed
  4. Check Unranked: Verifies all players have ranks
  5. Approve/Reject: Team is approved or rejected based on validation

Point Calculation

For each player:

  1. Determine Rank: Uses highest rank (Solo/Duo or Flex)
  2. Get Tier Points: Base points for tier
  3. Add Division Points: Additional points for division
  4. Add Platinum+ Points: Extra points if Platinum or above
  5. Total Player Points: Sum of all point components

Team Total

Team total points = Sum of all player points

Team must have: Total Points ≤ Point Cap

Configuration Examples

Balanced League (50 Points)

Settings:

  • Starting Points: 50
  • Max Rank: Diamond I 0LP
  • Exception Rank: Master 0LP
  • Max Exceptions: 1

Result:

  • Teams can have mix of Gold-Platinum players
  • One Master player allowed per team
  • Prevents all-Diamond teams

Competitive Tournament (75 Points)

Settings:

  • Starting Points: 75
  • Max Rank: Master 0LP
  • Exception Rank: Grandmaster 0LP
  • Max Exceptions: 2

Result:

  • Higher point cap for competitive play
  • Allows more high-ranked players
  • Still maintains some balance

Beginner-Friendly (30 Points)

Settings:

  • Starting Points: 30
  • Max Rank: Gold I 0LP
  • Exception Rank: Platinum IV 0LP
  • Max Exceptions: 0

Result:

  • Lower point cap for beginners
  • Stricter rank limits
  • Ensures balanced competition

Best Practices

Setting Point Caps

  • Consider Competition Level: Higher caps for competitive tournaments
  • Test with Sample Teams: Calculate points for example teams
  • Balance Fairness: Ensure cap allows diverse team compositions
  • Review Regularly: Adjust based on registration patterns

Exception Rules

  • Limit Exceptions: Keep max exceptions low (0-2 typically)
  • Set Appropriate Exception Rank: Not too high above max rank
  • Communicate Clearly: Explain exception rules to teams
  • Enforce Consistently: Apply rules fairly to all teams

Validation

  • Require Ranked Accounts: Ensure all players have ranks
  • Use Highest Rank: System uses Solo/Duo or Flex (whichever is higher)
  • Verify Before Approval: Check team balance before approving
  • Provide Feedback: Explain why teams are rejected

Common Scenarios

Team Rejected: Over Point Cap

Problem: Team total points exceed cap

Solution:

  • Team must replace players with lower ranks
  • Or wait for point cap increase (if using growth system)
  • Review point calculation to understand issue

Team Rejected: Too Many Exceptions

Problem: Team has more exception players than allowed

Solution:

  • Team must reduce number of high-ranked players
  • Replace exception players with players under max rank
  • Check exception rank settings

Team Rejected: Unranked Players

Problem: One or more players are unranked

Solution:

  • Players must complete ranked placements
  • Link Riot accounts and verify ranks
  • Ensure accounts are active and ranked

Troubleshooting

"Rank balance not working"

  • Verify rank balance is enabled
  • Check point settings are configured
  • Ensure players have linked Riot accounts
  • Verify rank data is up to date

"Points calculated incorrectly"

  • Check point values in settings
  • Verify rank data is accurate
  • Ensure using highest rank (Solo vs Flex)
  • Review point calculation logic

"Teams passing validation incorrectly"

  • Review point cap settings
  • Check exception rules
  • Verify rank data accuracy
  • Test with sample teams

Advanced Configuration

Growth Points System

For progressive balance:

  1. Starting Points: Initial cap (e.g., 50)
  2. Growth Points: Increased cap (e.g., 60)
  3. Growth Trigger: When to apply growth points
  4. Team Progression: Teams can improve over time

Custom Point Values

Adjust point values for:

  • Specific Tiers: Change points for certain tiers
  • Division Modifiers: Adjust division point values
  • LP Considerations: Factor in League Points if needed
