Understand how tournaments progress through different states and statuses during their lifecycle.
Tournament Lifecycle
Tournaments progress through several states:
- Draft: Being created, not yet published
- Open: Registration is open
- In Progress: Tournament is active
- Completed: Tournament has finished
Tournament States
Draft
Status: Tournament is being created
Characteristics:
- Not visible to public (unless configured)
- Registration not open
- Can be edited freely
- Not yet published
Actions Available:
- Edit all settings
- Create stages
- Configure registration
- Set up teams (manually)
When: During tournament creation and setup
Open (Registration Open)
Status: Registration is active
Characteristics:
- Visible to public
- Teams can register
- Registration deadline may be set
- Tournament not yet started
Actions Available:
- Manage registrations
- Approve/reject teams
- Edit settings (carefully)
- Prepare for start
When: After creation, before tournament starts
In Progress
Status: Tournament is active
Characteristics:
- Matches are being played
- Registration typically closed
- Teams are competing
- Results are being recorded
Actions Available:
- Manage matches
- Import games
- Update results
- Monitor progress
When: After start date, during active competition
Completed
Status: Tournament has finished
Characteristics:
- All matches completed
- Final standings determined
- Registration closed
- Results finalized
Actions Available:
- View final results
- Export data
- Archive tournament
- Review statistics
When: After end date, all matches completed
Status Indicators
Visual Indicators
Tournaments display status with:
- Color Coding: Different colors for each status
- Status Badge: Text indicator of current status
- Icons: Visual icons representing status
- Progress Bars: Show tournament progress

- Tournament list
- Tournament detail page
- Public tournament pages
- Admin dashboard
Status Transitions
Automatic Transitions
Some status changes happen automatically:
- Draft → Open: When registration is enabled
- Open → In Progress: When start date arrives
- In Progress → Completed: When end date passes and matches complete
Manual Transitions
You can manually change status:
- Open Registration: Enable registration to move to Open
- Close Registration: Close registration (stays Open until start)
- Start Tournament: Manually start tournament
- End Tournament: Manually complete tournament
Managing Status
Opening Registration
To open registration:
- Go to tournament settings
- Enable "Registration Open"
- Set registration deadline (optional)
- Save settings
- Tournament status updates to Open
Starting Tournament
Tournament starts automatically when:
- Start date arrives
- Or manually start in settings
To manually start:
- Go to tournament settings
- Find "Start Tournament" option
- Confirm start
- Status updates to In Progress
Completing Tournament
Tournament completes when:
- End date passes
- All matches are completed
- Or manually complete
To manually complete:
- Go to tournament settings
- Find "Complete Tournament" option
- Confirm completion
- Status updates to Completed

Draft Status
Available Features:
- Full editing access
- Stage creation
- Settings configuration
- Team management (manual)
Restrictions:
- Not visible to public
- Registration not available
- Matches cannot be generated
Open Status
Available Features:
- Team registration
- Registration management
- Public visibility
- Settings editing (careful)
Restrictions:
- Limited editing (some settings locked)
- Matches typically not generated yet
- Cannot start tournament early
In Progress Status
Available Features:
- Match management
- Game importing
- Result updates
- Live updates
Restrictions:
- Registration closed
- Limited settings editing
- Cannot change format
- Stage editing restricted
Completed Status
Available Features:
- View results
- Export data
- Statistics review
- Archive tournament
Restrictions:
- No editing
- Registration closed
- Matches locked
- Read-only access

Common Scenarios
Tournament Not Starting
Problem: Tournament not transitioning to In Progress
Solutions:
- Check start date is correct
- Verify start date has passed
- Manually start if needed
- Check for blocking issues
Registration Not Opening
Problem: Registration not available
Solutions:
- Verify "Registration Open" is enabled
- Check registration deadline hasn't passed
- Ensure tournament is not in Draft
- Verify settings are saved
Status Not Updating
Problem: Status not changing as expected
Solutions:
- Refresh the page
- Check date settings
- Verify automatic transitions are enabled
- Manually update status if needed
