Match States

Understand the different states matches can be in and what each state means.

Match States Overview

Matches can be in one of several states:

  • Pending: Match not yet scheduled
  • Scheduled: Match has date/time set
  • Live: Match is currently in progress
  • Completed: Match has finished
  • Forfeit: Match forfeited by a team
  • Disputed: Match result is disputed

Pending State

Characteristics

Visual Indicator: Gray or default color, "Pending" label

What It Means:

  • Match created but not scheduled
  • No date/time assigned
  • Ready to be scheduled
  • Games created but not played

When Matches Are Pending:

  • Immediately after creation
  • Before scheduling
  • After creation if not auto-scheduled

Actions Available

  • Schedule Match: Set date and time
  • Edit Match: Update match details
  • Assign Teams: Set home/away teams
  • Delete Match: Remove match if needed

Transitioning from Pending

Matches move from Pending to:

  • Scheduled: When date/time is set
  • Live: When match starts (manual or automatic)
  • Completed: When match finishes (rare without scheduling)

Scheduled State

Characteristics

Visual Indicator: Blue or scheduled color, "Scheduled" label

What It Means:

  • Match has date and time set
  • Teams know when to play
  • Match is planned
  • Games ready but not played

When Matches Are Scheduled:

  • After setting date/time
  • After match generation (if auto-scheduled)
  • After rescheduling

Actions Available

  • Edit Schedule: Change date/time
  • Start Match: Mark as Live when starting
  • View Details: See match information
  • Reschedule: Change schedule if needed

Transitioning from Scheduled

Matches move from Scheduled to:

  • Live: When match starts
  • Completed: When match finishes (if auto-completes)
  • Pending: If schedule is removed (rare)

Live State

Characteristics

Visual Indicator: Red or live color, "Live" label, may have live indicator

What It Means:

  • Match is currently being played
  • Teams are competing
  • Games are in progress
  • Match is active

When Matches Are Live:

  • Manually marked when match starts
  • During active gameplay
  • While games are being played

Actions Available

  • Import Games: Import games as they finish
  • Update Status: Update match status
  • Monitor Progress: Track match progress
  • Complete Match: Mark as completed when done

Transitioning from Live

Matches move from Live to:

  • Completed: When match finishes
  • Forfeit: If team forfeits
  • Disputed: If result is disputed

Completed State

Characteristics

Visual Indicator: Green or completed color, "Completed" label

What It Means:

  • Match has finished
  • All games completed or skipped
  • Result is final
  • Statistics available

When Matches Are Completed:

  • After all required games finish
  • When team reaches required wins
  • Manually marked as completed
  • After all games imported

Match Completion Logic

Match completes when:

  • Best of 1: 1 game completed
  • Best of 3: Team reaches 2 wins
  • Best of 5: Team reaches 3 wins
  • Best of 7: Team reaches 4 wins

Actions Available

  • View Results: See match results
  • View Statistics: See match statistics
  • Export Data: Export match data
  • Edit Result: Correct result if needed (rare)

Automatic Completion

Matches complete automatically when:

  • Required games are imported
  • Team reaches required wins
  • System detects completion
  • Unused games are auto-skipped

Forfeit State

Characteristics

Visual Indicator: Orange or forfeit color, "Forfeit" label

What It Means:

  • Team forfeited the match
  • Match didn't complete normally
  • Result determined by forfeit
  • May affect standings differently

When Matches Are Forfeited:

  • Team cannot play
  • Team withdraws
  • Administrative decision
  • Rule violation

Actions Available

  • View Details: See forfeit information
  • Edit Status: Change status if needed
  • Record Result: Record forfeit result
  • Handle Consequences: Manage forfeit consequences

Disputed State

Characteristics

Visual Indicator: Yellow or warning color, "Disputed" label

What It Means:

  • Match result is disputed
  • Requires review
  • May need resolution
  • Result not final

When Matches Are Disputed:

  • Teams dispute result
  • Technical issues
  • Rule violations
  • Administrative review needed

Actions Available

  • Review Dispute: Review dispute details
  • Resolve Dispute: Resolve the dispute
  • Update Result: Update result after resolution
  • Change Status: Move to appropriate status

State Transitions

Normal Flow

Typical Match Lifecycle:

  1. Pending → Match created
  2. Scheduled → Date/time set
  3. Live → Match starts
  4. Completed → Match finishes

Alternative Flows

Early Completion:

  • Pending/ScheduledCompleted (if auto-completes)

Forfeit:

  • Any StateForfeit (if team forfeits)

Dispute:

  • CompletedDisputed (if result disputed)

Managing Match States

Updating State

Manual State Update:

  1. Find match
  2. Click "Edit" match
  3. Change "Status" dropdown
  4. Save changes
  5. State updates immediately

Automatic State Updates

States update automatically:

  • Pending → Scheduled: When date/time set
  • Scheduled → Live: When match starts (if auto-detected)
  • Live → Completed: When match finishes
  • Any → Completed: When required wins reached

State Indicators

Visual Indicators

States are displayed with:

  • Color Coding: Different colors for each state
  • Status Badge: Text label showing state
  • Icons: Visual icons (if applicable)
  • Progress Indicators: Show match progress

Status Display

Status appears in:

  • Match list
  • Match detail page
  • Tournament schedule
  • Public match pages

Best Practices

State Management

  • Update Promptly: Update states as matches progress
  • Be Accurate: Ensure states reflect reality
  • Monitor States: Track match states regularly
  • Document Changes: Keep notes on state changes

State Transitions

  • Follow Flow: Use normal state flow when possible
  • Handle Exceptions: Manage forfeits and disputes properly
  • Verify Completion: Verify matches are truly completed
  • Review States: Regularly review match states

Common Scenarios

Match Not Starting

Problem: Match stuck in Scheduled

Solutions:

  • Manually mark as Live when starting
  • Verify match time has arrived
  • Check for auto-start settings
  • Update state manually

Match Not Completing

Problem: Match not moving to Completed

Solutions:

  • Verify all games are imported
  • Check match completion logic
  • Ensure required wins reached
  • Manually complete if needed

Wrong State Displayed

Problem: State doesn't match reality

Solutions:

  • Refresh the page
  • Verify match data
  • Check state transitions
  • Manually update state
